There has been a 41 percent cut in calories from beverages shipped to schools across America thanks to the beverage industry's progress.
This is just one of the findings contained in The School Beverage Guidelines Progress Report 2006-2007, which the beverage industry published as the initial report on implementation of the Guidelines. The data measurement and statistics in the report were prepared by Keybridge Research LLC, a Washington, D.C.-based economic analysis and public policy research firm, under the direction of Dr. Robert Wescott.
We're capping calories, reducing portion sizes and offering a range of nutritious beverage options. We are reformulating products, developing new packaging, retrofitting machines, training company employees on making the transition at schools in their areas, and working with schools and school districts to change the product mix.
The transition is time-consuming. But we are committed to making changes in more than 123,000 schools and thousands of school districts throughout the country. If current trends continue, we'll see even more progress this school year.
